Privacy and cookies

The short version

This site does not ask you for any personal information. There is no contact form, no sign-up, no newsletter and no account to create. The only way to get in touch is by email, and if you email me I will have your email address and whatever you choose to tell me.

Two third-party services do run on this site: Google Analytics, which tells me how many people visit and which pages they read, and Google AdSense, which shows the advertisements. Both set cookies or similar identifiers in your browser. Details of both are below, along with how to switch them off.

Cookies and similar technologies

A cookie is a small file a website asks your browser to store. This site sets none of its own. The cookies you may receive here come from Google, through the two services described below.

Google Analytics

I use Google Analytics 4 to count visits and see which pages are read. It records things such as the pages you view, roughly how long you stay, the approximate region you are in (from your IP address, which Google truncates), and whether you arrived from a search engine or another website. It does not tell me who you are, and I never try to identify individual visitors. Google’s own description of how it handles this data is at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites. You can block it entirely with Google’s official opt-out add-on at tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.

Google AdSense and advertising cookies

Advertisements on this site are served by Google AdSense. Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this and other websites. Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to this site and other sites on the internet.

You can opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings. You can also opt out of a third-party vendor’s use of cookies for personalised advertising at aboutads.info/choices or, in Europe, at youronlinechoices.com. Opting out does not remove advertising — you will still see ads, they will simply be less closely targeted.

You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings. Doing so will not stop you reading anything on this site.

If you email me

Email sent to enquiries@ivaadviceonline.com is received and stored in a Google Workspace mailbox. I keep correspondence only for as long as it is useful — usually no more than twelve months — and then delete it. I do not add anyone to a mailing list, and I do not sell, rent or share email addresses with anybody.

Please do not send sensitive personal details by email. You do not need to send account numbers, dates of birth or copies of documents to ask a question about this site, and I would rather not hold them.

Your rights

Under the UK General Data Protection Regulation and the Data Protection Act 2018 you have the right to ask what personal data is held about you, to have it corrected, to have it deleted, and to object to it being processed. If you have emailed this site and want that correspondence deleted, say so and it will be deleted.

The lawful basis for the limited processing described above is legitimate interest: running and improving a small information website, and replying to people who write in. If you are not happy with how a request is handled, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113.

External links

This site links to Companies House, the Insolvency Service, the Financial Conduct Authority register and a number of debt advice charities. Those organisations have their own privacy policies, and this one does not apply once you leave. Linking to a service is not an endorsement of it, and no payment is received for any link on this site to a charity or public body.

Changes and contact

If this policy changes, the date at the foot of the page changes with it. Questions about privacy, or a request to have data deleted, go to enquiries@ivaadviceonline.com.
